Document Exporters for QuarkXPress
Author: Andreas Imhof, www.AiEDV.ch

Cost-efficiency, quality, flexibility and speed are most important to all editors when publishing content from printed products on the Internet.
The main purpose of document extractors is to prevent or significantly reduce manual work needed to create text and image content suitable for web and database applications. No endless configuration process to create web output from text and image content.

The exporters «XTend-Xport» and «BatchXport» offer automatic export of well structured XML data from QuarkXPress documents, no coding or tagging is needed. Extracted document content includes rich tagged text, images converted to JPEG and optionally document and article PDFs.
Exports may be used in any application based on XML data like web systems for newspapers, specialized database applications, CD productions or e-paper and e-book web systems.

The XTensions BatchXport and XTend-Xport create identical output formats - one does it automatically, the other manually controlled:
XTend-Xport is designed to easily extract multiple formats from QuarkXPress documents with a single mouse click and BatchXport lets users create a fully automated, unattended export system.

Exporting a QuarkXPress document can be as easy as: Opening a document and pressing the "export" button – done.

Both exporters are pre-configured to create full featured XML for maximum flexibility. The small, clearly arranged main exporter window shows the most important options and messages only.

Many options may be set in the exporter's expanded main window like how to extract paragraph and text styles and other text attributes, image sizes and quality and how to link them into the text and more.

BatchXport IS XTend-Xport, controlled by an integrated script and Job Tickets. The fully automated application can process files found in local or network hot folders and performs multiple types of extractions from QuarkXPress documents.
Any number of Job Tickets, operating on hot folders with different actions and export types may be defined.
Job Tickets are loaded automatically when QuarkXPress launches and the monitoring of the specified hot folders starts immediately.

BatchXport converts a standard newspaper to e-Paper in less than 10 minutes. This enables editors to publish web content just in time with the printed product.

The integrated e-paper functionality lets users view and navigate exported documents as e-paper in a browser. This is very helpful when a quick overview of exported data is needed before it is pushed into the next system.

Document exporters and following processes are building a unity whose interface must be adjustable and very flexible. The keyword is "XML", the today's standard in data processing.
One kind only of using XML data is demonstrated in a database aided e-paper system at www.ePaperArchives.com:

Text Extract Features
Various extract formats in UTF-8 Universal encoding to XML, ePaper enabled XML, HTML4, HTML3 and plain text ensure compatibility among systems.
The unique Article Components Recognition system (ACR) automatically finds all components belonging to an article like title and lead boxes, article text boxes, image legends, images and merges them into an article group.
An automatically created CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) represents all the styles used in the currently extracted document and may be modified by the user to match the display needs.
Tables are coded in accordance with HTML and XML rules and may be viewed in a browser as formatted tables.

Image Extract Features
Images are converted to the JPEG format without external image conversion software and are linked directly into the text. Images, mainly built from text like advertisement, are still readable in a browser thanks to the smoothing function and adjustable quality.

Integrated Preview Creator
Creates WYSIWYG Previews as JPEG or PDF from articles and/or pages or even of the whole document and automatically includes links in the extracted article text. Smoothing function and adjustable quality as well as scalable sizes and border correction (add/cut) are integrated.
